-- If someone is always a bridesmaid, never a bride, they never manage to fulfill their ambition - they get close, but never manage to get the recognition, etc they crave

-- This means that in an emergency, any solution will do, even one that would normally be unacceptable

-- If you work at the coalface, you deal with the real problems and issues, rather than sitting in an office discussing things in a detached way
