Temporal rhythms
It just suddenly occurred to me that people often talk about how they are a "day" person or a "night" person, and how research attributes productivity at night or day to the valence of disposition - I think optimism is related to being a "day" person, and pessimism related to being a "night" person. How about someone who is both a day and a night person? Productive all the time? What does that make him/her? Or someone who is sometimes a night person and sometimes a day person? Perhaps it is not so much whether you are a day or night person, but how much sleep you get before you start work. Rest has been shown to be a good destressing mechanism. Perhaps it really is not related at all. And maybe pessimistic people tend to be "night" people because they procrastinate and therefore when they reach night time, they realize that they better start getting their work done and out before they sleep, and the stress from this realization makes them more productive at night. That means they BO BIAN. And optimistic people are "day" people because they don't procrastinate and get right to the task in the day and by the time they come to night time, they are so exhausted from working in the day that they are less productive at night. Therefore, what I'm saying is that maybe the relationship between optimism/pessimism and productivity in the night/day might be a spurious relationship or mediated by procrastination.
Since we're on the topic of procrastination, I'll throw in something I saw today. I happened to see this book called Eat The Frog in a bookstore at the airport. It's a book about procrastination. Like me, you might be wondering what procrastination has to do with frogs. Well, according to the short excerpt I read on the back cover of the book, there is a saying that you should eat frogs for breakfast. It sounds disgusting right? Well, that's the whole point. It just means that you should attack the most challenging task first because that's probably the one that will have the greatest impact on you. Well said, in my opinion. Since I'm such a great procrastinator these days. Ha. Eat That Frog Now!!
