SMU's Seven-Week Compulsory Etiquette Course
I can't resist it. I have to blog about this. Our competitor, the irreverent SMU, has changed its strategy and decided to repackage its goods in order to increase its sales. By investing more in branding and a makeover of its goods, it attempts to reposition itself in the market and attract more buyers who are interested in image and packaging. The perennial question is: How important is image? A look through the academic literature available currently confirms that both physical appearance of an individual as well as corporate image is important, and may even make or break a business deal, an interview, and elevates the regard people have of them. If so, is NUS losing out? A spokesperson from the Career Services Office said that they do not make it compulsory for us because they believe that they should make it available only to those who need it. Are they saying that we don't need it because we have a natural flair for etiquette and grooming? Or are they taking into account other faculties such as Computing and Science, and discounting their need for such etiquette courses? Comments please.
