KINSEY
A thought-provoking movie depicting US society in the first half of the twentieth century. A film for biology, sex and homosexual researchers. Certainly not for the sexually ignorant, sexually prudish and faint-hearted. Its R21 rating is deserved, with sex scenes between male and female, male and male, and a multitude of jargon that will shock and embarrass the most prim and proper of our society. A rather well-done biopic I would say, although I'm not sure how true it is to the real life of Kinsey. It would be good if you have flipped through the two famous Kinsey books - Sexual Behavior in the Human Male and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female. It would give you a better understanding of what was going on in the movie. For academics, you would perhaps find this film enlightening, as you understand the motivation underlying Kinsey's study and the difficulties he faced in research. Personally, I identify with his situation when I did my homosexual research. The way he went about asking for sex histories reminds me of my data collection process. It's tough when you're working on taboo topics. But... no pain, no gain. And in finance, you learn that the higher the risk, the higher the return. The increased challenge of my topic gave me greater satisfaction. However, I have some issues with the way Kinsey carried out his research. His research design seems fundamentally flawed, and in many cases, his method of collecting data seemed to violate ethical norms. All in all, I truly admire Kinsey's passion, determination and guts, and I believe that this should drive academic research, and not just number of publications. So for academics reading this, please, please, let passion be the driving force, not practicality. It shows.
Warning: Please do not try watching this movie while seated at the couple seats at the back, although they have the best view. You will be surrounded by couples who whisper throughout the movie, and have indecent romps next to you. On top of that, there will be silly girls going "eee" during the male-male scene. Give them the eye if they dare do that, I guarantee they will stop. But if possible, just don't spoil your movie experience by choosing such a seat.
